KORAPUT: For Anna Langdon of Chester in the United Kingdom the tour to India and more importantly to a place like Koraput was a journey full of excitement. She was one of the 10-member team from UK that was part of the 15th ‘India Bike Ride-2010’ organised by Lepra society in India.
The cycle rally began on January 22 in Visakhapatnam with an aim to raise funds in the UK for leprosy relief work in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh apart from spreading awareness on health issues like leprosy, HIV/AIDS, eye care, malaria and other allied diseases in the region.
The cycle rally passed through the town on Thursday.
Anna, a nurse by profession, is keen on seeing a different side to health care and the way it is delivered in a far off place from her country. Among others she had Jane Langdon, her mother who had already been in lots of Lepra bike rides in Malawi, Madagascar and India. “These are great opportunities to meet the indigenous people and to experience their way of life,” she says.
Howard Crossley, a naturalist from Sheffield, was excited at visiting places away tourist circuit and meeting the group of people living amidst the serene natural beauty while experiencing the local cultures. For Nicky Lief ,originally from South Africa and now living in North Finchley, having been to India in 2009, it was an exciting experience -- seeing buffalos, eating fragrant rice pudding and more importantly once again meeting the very special people of the region that Lepra helps.
