CMAS leader's bail plea rejected

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: The arrested adviser of the controversial Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS), Gananath Patra, was refused bail by the Laxmipur court in Koraput district on Friday.
The court rejected the bail plea of Patra and remanded him to police custody for further interrogation and investigation. He was arrested in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday evening. His bail plea in Bhubaneswar court was rejected on Thursday and Koraput district police had taken him on transit remand. Amidst extreme tight security he was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court at Laxmipur in Koraput district. It may be noted that Patra has six serious cases against him in police stations of Koraput district including an allegation of murder.
The court remanded Patra to police custody till Sunday. For security reasons, Patra would be shifted to Koraput, the Koraput Superintendent of Police, Anup Sahu said.
According to Mr. Sahu the arrested man would be interrogated regarding the links of the CMAS with Maoists and the future plans of the CMAS which had made Narayanpatna block one of the most violent and volatile areas of Orissa. Police would also try to extract information about the whereabout of president of CMAS, Nachika Linga, who is suspected to be evading the police with the help of naxals.

Tight security

Security continued to be tight in Narayanpatna block of Koraput district following the arrest of Patra due to fears of violent backlash by the supporters of CMAS, its militant organisation ‘Ghenua Bahini’ or the Maoists who have till date supported the violent activities of the CMAS. The SP said after about a week all roads in Narayanpatna could be cleared of obstacles on Friday. The last road to be cleared was the Narayanpatna-Laxmipur road where two landmine blasts occurred during the past week killing four civilians. But the telecommunication remained snapped in the Naryanpatna block as the underground optical fibres were cut down at several places.
