Rail blockade continues

Staff Reporter

BJD MLA of Jeypore Rabi Narayan Nanda is leading the agitation.
BERHAMPUR: The rail blockade at Jeypore in Koraput district continued for the second day on Monday.
The request of the General Manager (GM) East Coast Railways to the agitators to end their blockade could not pacify the agitators. BJD MLA of Jeypore Rabi Narayan Nanda, who is leading the agitators, said the GM had called him up on Monday urging to call off the strike and come for a discussion. But Mr Nanda did not agree to the proposal. He urged the railway authorities to hold discussions with them at their point of agitation.
This blockade had started on Sunday morning against alleged step-motherly attitude of the railways towards the undivided Koraput district. The agitators dared the winter chill to sit on the railway track throughout the night. Their agitation has disrupted transportation of iron ore from Bastar region to Visakhapatnam. This agitation has been taken up by the activists of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) with support of trade unions, the CPI, Bar Associations and Chambers of Commerce of Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri districts. The goods trains and passenger trains on the route had to be cancelled. The major demands of agitators include extension of Koraput-Bhubaneswar Hirakhand express, Koraput-Howrah Samaleswari Express, Koraput-Visakhapatnam DMU up to Jeypore and transformation of passenger train traveling from Kirandul to Visakhapatnam to an express train.
