Ryots group initiative quenches their thirst

Correspondent
KORAPUT: Each drop of water from the taps in Mugunaguda, a tiny village in the foothills of Maliparvat mountain range in Semiliguda block, gives a ray of hope for a new life. Fresh hopes were regenerated in the lives of 41 families from Kondh tribe who lived for generations in the village when the volunteers from Koraput Farmers’ Association (KFA) had come up with a plan a few months ago to bring water from the nearby mountain stream under ‘spring-based piped water supply scheme’ under World Food Programme(WFP), Ram Nayak, a young villager from Mugunaguda said.
The village was facing a great amount of problem for want of potable water as the water from the only tubewell in the village was not worth drinking and the women folk had to go up the mountain to collect water from Champa Dangar, a perennial stream, after covering a distance of about 1 km. During the rainy season, it was difficult to gather water from the stream, he added.
It’s a boon now for all the villagers to get water from the taps in front of the house, Buduri Hantal, an elderly woman from the village, said. Some youths from the village also have learnt the art of repairing pipes.
This has added to the confidence of the villagers.
