Panchayat member killed by suspected Maoists

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: A ward member of the Undurikonda panchayat of Kalimela block in Malkangiri district was allegedly murdered by Maoists.
The deceased was identified as Salbam Irma. His body was recovered from a spot near the
Undurikonda village on Saturday night. Investigations revealed that his own family members had buried his body out of panic of naxals.
His family members wanted to escape from police investigation due to threats of Maoists. Meanwhile police has recovered the body and investigation is on to track down the killers.
According to sources Irma had been taken away from his home by a group of four persons, suspected to be Maoists. Later his body was found by his family members near the village. His killers had slit open his throat to kill him.
It is suspected that he may have been killed by Maoists for his alleged police links.
Through this killing the Leftist miscreants have also tried to terrorise the elected panchayat body members in this naxal infested district.
Meanwhile the road communication between Malkangiri with outside world could be resumed on Sunday.
On Saturday naxals and their supporters had cut down trees near Govindpalli to snap road communication between Malkangiri and Jeypore in Koraput district.
This road blockade was part of the 24-hour long bandh call by the Maoists in protest against the arrest of their leader Chakradhar Mahato in West Bengal’s West Midnapur district.
Maoists had also blocked roads at several places between their strongholds of Kalimela and Motu in Malkangiri district.
These road blocks have also been removed. In May Malkangiri district had remained cut-off from rest of the State for over a week due to blockades made by cutting down trees by the Leftist rebels near Govindpalli.
But this time less number of trees had been cut down, so the road could be cleared up early.
The road blocks that had been put up by the Maoists and their supporters in Koraput district were also cleared up.
On Saturday the road communication between Machkund and Lamtaput in Koraput district was hampered as the Maoists and their supporters had dug up the road to obstruct vehicular traffic.
