Umbrellas, schools bags given to children

KORAPUT: It is not only the conservation of soil that was important but the preservation of a secure future for the children of today that is needed , said Dayanidhi Bagh , Assistant Soil Conservation officer of Koraput district . He was speaking at a meeting to distribute umbrella and school bags to poor children under Watershed plus programme of soil conservation department at Manabar UP School near Koraput town on Wednesday.
While the earlier watershed programmes were designed to conserve soil from natural hazards and channelling livelihood support for the selected people under its coverage, the present programme would cover all the villagers providing assistance for stabilizing their sources of livelihood on the basis of a wellbeing scale, he added.
Rain being a greater obstacle to children while attending their schools in Koraput region, the programme had realized the importance of an umbrella and a school bag for the poor children to come to school regularly and hence the programme, P. K. Nayak, soil conservation officer, said.
Selected schoolchildren from Manabar, Mastiput and Lendri Maliguda were given one umbrella and a school bag each, he added. Ashok Kumar Pangi , president, Koraput Zilla Parishad, and Raghuram Padal, MLA, Koraput, also spoke.
