Road blockades by CMAS continue in Koraput

Staff Reporter
BERHAMPUR: Road blockades by felling trees and violent show of power by Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) organisations continue to happen in Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon blocks of Koraput district.
Till now the administration and police have failed to curb this menace, which is recurring in these two blocks. On Thursday trees were cut down near Almonda to block the road communication between Bandhugaon and Parvatipuram in adjoining Andhra Pradesh. Some suspicious packets and wires were also seen to be attached to the fallen trees. As there was suspicion that this may be handiwork of naxals and landmines may have been fitted to the trees, no one has dared to remove them.
Speaking to The Hindu, the Collector of Koraput, Gadadhar Parida said a meeting had been called up for crisis management. It has been decided to clear up the road blockades with the help of bomb disposal squads.
He however added that in both Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon blocks miscreants were also creating panic. According to him the situation in both these blocks were improving.
But on Thursday the members of the Narayanpatna-based CMAS entered Bandhugaon block and destroyed 14 lemon grass processing units. The CMAS activists are opposed to the cash crop cultivation of lemon grass in tribal areas.
