Koraput Zilla Shanti Committee formed under the leadership of Laxmipur block chairperson

KZSC activists ready to hold talks with CMASState blamed for tense situation

BERHAMPUR: Around 35,000 persons gathered at Laxmipur in Koraput district on Friday to oppose the violent activities of Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) of Narayanpatna.
It hinted that the activities of Narayanpatna-based CMAS, which is in an expansionist mood, may push the district into the fire of ethnic violence. Since past few months the CMAS had resorted to arson and other violent activities against non-tribals in Narayanpatna block leading to exodus of non-tribals from the area. Now it is trying to expand its activities to other blocks of the district.
The large crowd that had gathered at Laxmipur, included inhabitants of Laxmipur, Semiliguda and Dasmantpur blocks of Koraput district and Kasipur block of adjoining Rayagada district.
They were mostly non-tribals. They formed an organisation ‘Koraput Zilla Shanti Committee (KZSC)’ under the leadership of Kumuda Saanta, the chairperson of Laxmipur block.
The KZSC alleged that in the name of tribal land movement, the CMAS activists of Narayanpatna were only fanning casteist violence.
They said they were ready to have pace talks with the CMAS but were not ready to bow down to violent pressure tactics of the CMAS.
They vowed not to let CMAS activists of Narayanpatna expand their violent activities to other blocks.

Massive rally

On Sept 8, the Narayanpatna CMAS activists had tried to hold a massive armed rally in Laxmipur which had been opposed by the inhabitants of Laxmipur. Presence of 35 platoons of police had prevented possibility of clash.
Meanwhile, 10 families of Upperkanti village in Semiliguda block of Koraput district left their village on Friday due to alleged attacks by Narayanpatna CMAS activists.
The CMAS activists of Bandhugaon block of Koraput district, who are opposed to their counterpart in Narayanpatna block due to its alleged violent expansionist mood, alleged that 11 of their members including two women were missing since Sept 6 following attacks by Narayanpatna group members.
Convener of the Bandhugaon CMAS, Srikant Mohanty said seven of the missing members were from Almonda, two were from Bankidi one each were from Kabiti and Katalada.
He urged the administration to intervene and find out the whereabouts of these persons.
District president of the Koraput unit of the Congress Siba Patnaik blamed the administration and the government for not taking any strict action due to which the district was becoming more and more tense due to activities of the CMAS.
