Maoist bandh begins with violence

BERHAMPUR: Maoists started their week-long bandh call in south Orissa from Saturday through acts of violence in Koraput and Malkangiri districts to create panic in the minds of common mass on Friday night.
They have given this call for this week ‘economic blockade' to oppose the proposed ‘Operation Greenhunt'. They showed up their fangs in Malkangiri district and Narayanpatna area in Koraput district to show up their antagonism to Border Security Force (BSF) personnel deployed in the area.
A group of armed Maoists and their supporters stuck at Podapadar in Narayanpatna block of Koraput district. They damaged two uninhabited government quarters there.
One of these quarters was meant for the Livestock Inspector and the other was for the Auxiliary Nurse & Midwife (ANM). According to Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP), Anup Sahu, the naxals and their supporters used digging instruments to damage these two newly constructed residential quarters for government employees. They escaped into the jungle after the attack.
Maoists dug up the road and cut down trees to block the Narayanpatna-Bandhugaon road.
The road was dug up at a place just four kilometers from Narayanpatna. The road was also dug up at another place and trees were cut down at few places to stop traffic on it.
This road had been cleared up from road blockades of Maoists just a few days back. The Maoists preferred to strike at Govindpalli ghat road at Malkangiri-Koraput district border to prove that they still rule in the area where they had killed 11 security personnel in landmine blast on April 4.
They cut down trees to block the road at Govindpalli ghat disrupting road communication between Malkangiri and Jeypore in Koraput district.
In most places Maoists left banners and posters against the proposed major joint operation against them.
They threatened of dire consequences like that of recent Dantewada carnage if ‘Operation Greenhunt' was not stopped.Road communication was hampered in big way in south Orissa due to this bandh call. The Orissa State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) stopped plying its buses to naxal-infested areas of Kandhamal, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts.
