Laxmipur court rejects his bail plea again


BERHAMPUR: The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court at Laxmipur in Koraput district on Monday again rejected the bail plea of the arrested adviser of the alleged Maoist-backed Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS), Gananath Patra. He was, however, sent to judicial custody till February 8. On Friday the same court remanded him to police custody till Sunday. He had been arrested in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. After interrogating for two days, the police produced him in court on Monday. It may be noted that Patra has six serious cases against him in police stations of Koraput district including an allegation of murder.
Under tight security he was transported to the Koraput jail. While in police custody, he was interrogated regarding the links of the CMAS and the Maoists, whereabouts of the absconding president of the organisation Nachika Linga, funding sources of the CMAS and its militant outfit ‘Ghenua Bahini’ etc.

‘Not revealed much’


Speaking to The Hindu, Koraput Superintendent of Police Anup Sahu said as expected the activist did not reveal much. He talked a lot about high sounding ideologies during interrogation, the SP added. But the interrogation surely revealed that he had tacit link with the Maoists. Mr. Sahu said the CMAS was not violent till it worked on its own in Koraput district. But its gradual criminalisation and increase in violent activities coincided with the link up of outsiders like arrested Patra and the Maoists with the organisation. Police alleged that at several places presence and instigation of Patra had led to large-scale arson and violence. It may be noted that the violent activities and link with Maoists had brought in division in the CMAS. The activities of the CMAS in Bandhugaon block of Koraput district had distanced themselves and become a separate entity when the Narayanpatna CMAS group led by Nachika Linga got influenced by the violent ideology of Patra and Maoists, the !
SP said.
According to him at present they do not have any need to interrogate Patra any more. But if needed police may demand for his custody for more interrogation and investigation.
