Village deity of Dudhari gets invitation for Dussehra fete at Jeypore

Ch.Santakar

KORAPUT: It was more than a celebrating moment for Dhaniya Barik, an old man at Dudhari in Semiliguda block of Koraput district for having received the invitation from the Dussehra Puja Committee of Jeypore to attend the festival with their village deity. It was for the first time after abolition of the estate that Maa Maulima, the village deity of Dudhari was invited by the committee to participate in the Dussehra celebration at Jeypore, he said. For Dhaniya who is a nonagenarian it was a moment to recall the events that used to happen during the times of the Kings when he had accompanied the villagers of Dudhari along with the neighbouring villages like Mundarguda, Haldibad, Thiapar, Sundhiput, Badliguda who had travelled to Jeypore while carrying the sacred lathi, the representative of the village deity Maa Maulima after covering more than 50 km of distance by walk every year.

Great honour

While it took two days to reach the destination it never was a painful journey to walk such a long distance, for, it was a matter of great honour to be with the village deity on her journey to join the other deities at Jeypore who reach from different parts of the Jeypore kingdom. Music played by the traditional band accompanying the team all along was also an added attraction for the people who used to receive the team on their way to the estate, he said.
While Dussehra at Jeypore carried national significance for its unique way of observing the festival, the entire responsibility to manage the show was taken up by the Endowments Department after abolition of the zamindari estates in the country and for the lack of availability of funds and involvement of the public, the traditional practice of sending invitation to the village deities had come down drastically over the years, Paresh Rath, member of the puja committee who had reached Dudhari to offer invitation to the villagers on Tuesday said.

Age-old practice

However with a section of people at Jeypore coming out to revive the age-old practice of celebrating Dussehra for 16 days amidst the deities accompanied by their priests and followers reaching from different corners of the undivided Koraput district, the practice of sending the invitations to the village deities was revived few years back, he said. Of the 16 days of the celebration, eighth day carries one of the most significant moments when all the sacred lathis which are eventually the representatives of the respective village deities reach Jeypore. Apart from inviting the deities to the festival it was most important to find suitable places for their placement during their stay. Specific arrangements are planned for each deity depending on their affinities, likes and preferences. The sacred lathis from the abodes of Jamunda Bhairava, Khadapa, Salapa, Telia, Kanga, Dharanahandi reach Banko Matha and proceed together to the temple of Devi Bhagavati where the sacred lathi of!
Bhairava stays in the temple premises while other lathis proceed to the temple of Devi Dakshina Kalika and take rest, he added.

Anti-Vedanta rally at Muniguda on October 5

CPI (ML New Democracy) extends support to the movementWeek-long padayatra to be launched from Idurupa village from September 29

BERHAMPUR: The ‘Niyamgiri Surakhya Samity (NSS)’ has started publicity campaign for a major mass movement in remote areas of Rayagada and Kalahandi districts against the mining by Vedanta Alumina Limited (VAL).
The NSS is planning to hold a large anti-Vedanta rally at Muniguda in Rayagada district on October 5.
A week-long ‘padayatra’ in areas to be affected by the bauxite mining by the company would precede it. According to the action committee member of the NSS, Rabi Kumbhruka they have already started the efforts to garner support for the rally and ‘padayatra’.
It is mostly being done through interpersonal communication.
Mr. Kumbhurka informed that a meeting was held at Sakata village of Muniguda block on September 12 to chalk out the plans in detail of this campaign.
This meeting was also attended by the former MLA of Bisamkatak, Sarangdhar Kadraka, who has decided to help this anti-Vedanta movement in the area. The CPI (ML New Democracy) has also extended its support to the movement.
The ‘padayatra’ would start from Idurupa village of Lanjigarh block in Kalahandi district on September 29. It would conclude at Sakata village on October 5.
The protestors who would have gathered up at Sakata would march to Muniguda for the large rally.

Major base

Mr. Kumbhurka said their main aim is to make people and government alert about the illegal mining by the VAL in Niyamgiri hills, which would affect the life and livelihood of people of the area. They have chosen Muniguda as their site of agitation as it is a major base for the company.
Bhala Chandra Sarangi, the spokesperson of the CPI (ML New Democracy) said “People should know how the VAL had started mining in the Niyamgiri hills without proper environmental clearance”.
The VAL is setting up an alumina refinery in Orissa at an estimated investment of over Rs. 4,000 crore.
The construction of refinery unit is complete. It is to depend on ores mined from Niyamgiri region.
But the mining has been delayed due to court cases and protest by green activists.
It faces stiff opposition of the locals of around 104 tribal villages to be affected by this controversial mining project who have formed the NSS.
The affected persons include more than 7,987 primitive Dongria Kondh and Jharania Kondh tribals of the region. Green activists also allege that mining in the area would affect the water flow in the major rivers of south Orissa that emerge from the Niyamgiri region.

'NALCO must do more for villages'

KORAPUT, 14 SEPT: "Villages in the periphery of NALCO in the Koraput district could enjoy the benefits of real development if local leaders, district administration and NALCO authorities could collaborate among themselves in a better way," said Mr Chitta Ranjan Pradhan, the chief managing director (CMD) of NALCO at Damanjodi today.
"The peripheral villages are struggling hard to meet their daily needs, basic health facilities being a major problem, despite several existing plans for their development," he said. However, proposals like the plan to construct a 25 bedded hospital by the company with support from the district administration could go a long way in realising the dreams of resident villagers," he added.
While addressing the media he said that he was not able to transform even one tenth of his dreams into reality with the help of the company even though he was on his way to taking the superannuation this month after serving for 27 long years in the company.
The dreams to raise the performance of the company to the international standard could not be materialised for different reasons. While the mechanisation of the company was upgraded to the best in the industry anywhere in the world, the input cost remained high with 21 per cent of the total cost going towards human resource management. The output given by 400 persons here could well be achieved by employing only four persons in companies elsewhere overseas.
While there was a need to bring greater results with minimum inputs especially at a time when the entire industry especially the aluminum industry is facing hard days after the recent recession in the global economy, options of downsizing human resources were not possible in the country, he said. However the company was planning to undertake massive expansion plans both in and outside the country by bringing about maximum utilization of its human resources.
Listing out the plans of the company, he said that adding to the mining in a rich reserve of bauxite in the Pottangi region of Koraput district, deals were in the final stage to acquire mining zones at Gudem & KR Konda mining sites at Chintapalli near Visakhapatnam including some other places near the Godavari region in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh.
Moreover the company also was making arrangements with the government in Iran to set up a smelter plant in that country.
Speaking about the plans for a sustainable power supply for the company, he said that in addition to the power plant that was coming up at Jharsuguda in the state under the company, a coal based power plant was coming up in the very near future in Indonesia. Talks to establish a nuclear power plant by the company were in progress with the support of the Nuclear Power Corporation and places in Ganjam district in the state have been placed for selection before the corporation in this regard.
While the company was going for austerity measures to cut down its financial burden for the lowering of profitability over the years, it was aiming at improving the situation by increasing the turnover of the company to more than Rs 10,000 crore from its existing turnover of Rs 6,000 crore a year within the next five years, he added. Among others Mr PK Mahapatra, ED (M&R) and Mr RP Swain, general manager (H&A) were also present. SNS

Breakaway group of CMAS trying to dilute it, says AIKMKS leader

BHUBANESWAR: Internal feuds among organisations involved in “land struggle” in Koraput district are now out in open with All India Khet Mazdoor Kisan Sabha (AIKMKS) here on Monday alleged “certain anarchist elements led by Gananath Patra resorted to killing and looting”.
Addressing a press conference, convenor of AIKMKS Subodh Mitra said their struggle to end land alienation and restore lost land with tribals and landless dalits was the real mass movement in Koraput and Rayagada districts.
A breakaway group of Chasi Muliya Advasi Sangha (CMAS) under leadership of Nachika Linga was trying to dilute the struggle by making it “tribal specific”, said Mr. Mitra.

Terrorising people

He charged “the group is terrorising the people and propagate false propaganda to create division between tribal and other poor inhabitants of the area.” AIKMKS sought to clarify that no naxal group was involved in the land struggle and it was purely a democratic movement.
For last six months in Narayanpatna block of Koraput district, activists CMAS, which is claimed to have been affiliated to AIKMKS, have been occupying lands on a large scale claiming that these patches were fraudulently occupied by moneylenders and outsiders from tribals years ago.
Speaking on the occasion, K. Kotaiah, a senior AIKMKS leader, said they were engaged in on grassroots struggle for past 15 years for rights over land, forest and other natural resources in tribal areas.

False cases

He alleged fearing consequences of mass upsurge, vested interest outsiders with the help of current government officials were conspiring to divide people. “False cases are being filed against CMAS activists and several arrests have been made,” he said.
AIKMKS leaders alleged that a tribal girl, member of CMAS, was gang-raped by 17 persons when they informed Bandhugaon outpost about the ghastly act, police bluntly refused to accept FIR.
